Wolves have appointed former Spain and Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui as the club’s new manager. The 56 year old Spaniard was sacked by Sevilla last month and was immediately approached by Wolves to take over from Bruno Lage but he rejected their offer before initiating talks with Wolves in recent days.

The Football Association has announced that it is appealing against the decision to let Jurgen Klopp escape a touchline ban for his behaviour against Manchester City. Klopp was sent off by referee Anthony Taylor after screaming in the face of a linesman who was running past him. The German was angry that Taylor had not awarded Liverpool a free-kick when Mohamed Salah was upended by Bernardo Silva.

FC Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué has announced his retirement from professional football with his final game set to be this Saturday as Barcelona take on Almeria in La Liga. The 35 year old has had a glittering career at both club and national level winning the World Cup and European Championship with Spain.

Rico Lewis became the youngest player to score on his first Champions League start as he sparked a Manchester City comeback in a 3-1 win over Sevilla. The 17-year-old right-back coolly slotted home the equaliser after Rafa Mir had headed Sevilla into a shock first-half lead with Julian Alvarez and Riyad Mahrez completing the comeback.

Late goals from Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez helped Liverpool to a 2-0 win over Napoli but the Italians still finished top dogs in Champions League Group A. With a lack of jeopardy on the game neither team really moved out of second gear as the chances of Liverpool overturning a four-goal swing to top the group never threatened to materialise.
