The Reds were stunned on the break inside three minutes when AC Milan winger Christian Pulisic found the net with a driven strike across goal. Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has died at the age of 76. Eriksson, the first non-British manager of the England team, led the Three Lions to the quarter-finals at three major tournaments during his five-year spell in charge between 2001 and 2006. In January Eriksson said he had “at best” a year to live after being diagnosed with cancer.

Arsenal have signed Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for a fee of up to £42m including add-ons. The 22-year-old, who started Italy’s three group games at Euro 2024, has signed a five-year deal with Mikel Arteta’s side. He has immediately joined up with his new team-mates in Philadelphia. Calafiori, who spent one season at Bologna, can play as a central defender or at left-back – and has previously played on the left wing.

Italian club Juventus have appointed former Bologna boss Thiago Motta as their new manager. The 41-year-old, who played for Italy and Juve’s Serie A rivals Inter Milan as a midfielder, has signed a three-year deal until June 2027. He replaces Massimiliano Allegri, who was sacked two days after he led the side to the Italian Cup.
