Southampton see off Leeds to win promotion to Premier League

Southampton beat Leeds in the Championship play-off final to secure an immediate return to the Premier League and the £140m to go with it. Saints’ 11-year spell in the top flight came to an end after a wretched campaign last time out but, despite finishing one place and three points behind Leeds in fourth, it is they who join Leicester and Ipswich in going up thanks to a first half strike from Adam Armstrong.

West Ham appoint Julen Lopetegui as new head coach

West Ham United have confirmed that Julen Lopetegui has taken over as manager after David Moyes’s exit at the end of the Premier League season. Lopetegui has managed Spain and Real Madrid but was most recently with Wolves, stepping down on the eve of the new season in August 2023. The 57-year-old previously guided Sevilla to the Europa League title in 2019-20, as well as consecutive finishes in the top four of Spain’s La Liga.

Mauricio Pochettino leaves Chelsea by mutual agreement after one season

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has left the club by mutual consent after just one season at Stamford Bridge. Pochettino, 52, took charge of Chelsea on 1 July, signing a two-year contract with the option of a further year. The Argentine was under pressure after an underwhelming first half of the season but a run of five successive wins to end the season ensured they finished sixth in the Premier League.

Liverpool appoint Arne Slot as new head coach

Arne Slot has been confirmed as Liverpool manager with the 45-year-old officially announced as Jürgen Klopp’s successor at Anfield 24 hours after his predecessor’s final game in charge. Slot waved farewell to Dutch club Feyenoord on Sunday after a 4-0 win against Excelsior in Rotterdam and will start his new role at Liverpool on June 1.

Manchester City breeze past West Ham to clinch Premier League title

Imperious Manchester City beat West Ham 3-1 at Etihad Stadium to become the first team to win the English league title four seasons in a row. With City needing a win to be sure of holding off Arsenal Phil Foden put Pep Guardiola’s side ahead after just two minutes. Foden would add another with Rodi scoring in the second half to ease any nerves after Mohammed Kudus pulled one back for the Hammers.
