Francisco Conceicao scored a late winner as Portugal fought back from a goal down to beat Czech Republic in their Euro 2024 opener in Leipzig. The Czech Republic spent much of the game defending in their own half but stunned Portugal when Lukas Provod’s whipped second-half strike flew into the far corner. However their hopes of victory were dashed soon after as goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek parried Nuno Mendes’ header and the ball bounced off Robin Hranac and into the back of his own net.

Arda Güler inspires Turkey to victory over spirited Georgia

Teenager Arda Guler scored on his European Championship debut as Turkey broke Georgia’s hearts with a thrilling Group F victory in Dortmund. Right-back Mert Muldur gave Turkey the lead in the 25th minute but seven minutes later, Georges Mikautadze scored Georgia’s first goal in a major tournament. Guler’s 65th minute strike saw Turkey regain the lead but the Georgians tested them until the final whistle.

Kylian Mbappe produced a moment of magic – mixed with good fortune – to ensure France’s Euro 2024 campaign got off to a winning start against a stubborn Austria in Dusseldorf. But he was also at the centre of a late injury scare. France’s captain and Real Madrid’s latest “Galactico” was replaced in the 90th minute as an eventful night ended with him covered in blood following a painful blow to his nose after an aerial clash with Austria defender Kevin Danso.

Slovakia caused an upset in their Euro 2024 opener as they stunned Group E favourites Belgium in a chaotic encounter in Frankfurt. Ivan Schranz put Slovakia ahead when he capitalised on a mistake at the back and there was drama in the final minutes as Romelu Lukaku thought he had equalised, only for VAR to rule it out for handball in the build-up.

Stanciu scores screamer as Romania dominate Ukraine

Romania recorded their first victory at a European Championship in 24 years with a stunning win over Ukraine in Group E. Captain Nicolae Stanciu gave Romania a surprise lead in the 29th minute, finding the top corner with a brilliant strike from 20 yards out. Razvan Marin then doubled the Tricolours’ lead after 53 minutes with Denis Dragus rounding out the scoring.
