Everton have received an immediate 10-point deduction after being found to have breached the Premier League’s financial rules. English top-flight clubs are permitted to lose £105m over three years, and an independent commission found Everton’s losses to 2021-22 amounted to £124.5m. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been charged by the Football Association for comments he made after their 1-0 defeat by Newcastle. Arteta, 41, called the video assistant referee’s (VAR) decision to allow Newcastle’s goal “embarrassing” and a “disgrace”. Arteta has until Tuesday to respond to the charge.

Cole Palmer’s stoppage-time penalty denied former club Manchester City victory in a thriller against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. In a game of the highest quality in treacherous conditions, fortunes swung both ways. Liverpool suffered a dramatic 3-2 loss at French side Toulouse in Europa League Group E on Thursday after the English side had a potential equaliser ruled out in the final minute of added time.
