Palmer influential as Chelsea edge out Newcastle

Cole Palmer was hugely influential as Chelsea saw off Newcastle in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge. Palmer struck in the 57th minute, taking a touch to get the ball out of his feet before drilling hard and low past goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. The Blues had gone ahead early after Sven Botman’s poor clearance was pounced on by Palmer, his shot being cleverly steered into the bottom corner by Nicolas Jackson for his second goal in as many league games.

Liverpool and City share spoils as Arsenal stay top

Liverpool and Manchester City fought out a thrilling draw at Anfield to leave Arsenal top of the Premier League. John Stones had given City a first half lead from a well worked corner routine however an early second half penalty conceded by Ederson allowed Alexis Mac Allister to restore parity from the spot. Both sides saw chances to take three points but in the end the spoils were shared.

Kane leads Bayern past Lazio into quarter-finals

Harry Kane scored two to help Bayern Munich overturn a first-leg deficit against Lazio and advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Rome, Bayern looked set for a frustrating night until Kane’s header levelled the scores on aggregate. Long-serving Thomas Muller doubled the lead on the night with another header.

Foden the hero as City comeback to win Manchester Derby

Phil Foden scored twice in the second half as Manchester City came from behind to beat Manchester United 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium. Marcus Rashford’s thumping long shot had given Erik ten Hag’s team an unlikely lead in the Manchester derby and Erling Haaland’s shocking miss from much closer range allowed United to retain the lead until the interval. But they could not hold on.

Everton’s Premier League points deduction reduced to six on appeal

Everton’s penalty for breaching Premier League financial rules has been reduced from 10 points to six after an appeal. The club were immediately docked 10 points in November for breaking profit and sustainability rules (PSR) in the three-year period to 2021-22. The reduction lifts them from 17th to 15th, although the club is facing another possible points deduction.
