Georgia reach last 16 with famous win over Portugal

Georgia made history and reached their first major tournament knockout stage with victory over Portugal at Euro 2024. Portugal had already won the group, but were shocked in their final group stage game before the clock struck two minutes as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia drilled a low shot past Diogo Costa. Georges Mikautadze added a second from the penalty spot to send the debutants into dreamland and a last 16 tie with Spain.

Tosun the hero as Turkey edge out 10 man Czech Republic

Cenk Tosun scored a stoppage-time winner as Turkey beat the Czech Republic in a fiery final group game to secure a last-16 tie against Austria. The Czechs needed to win Wednesday’s final group game to avoid being eliminated, and they pushed for victory in the tense closing stages. But they left gaps in defence and former Everton striker Tosun cut inside and drove a shot into the back of the net.

Romania and Slovakia both progress after fiery draw

Romania finished top of Group E as they and Slovakia reached the last 16 at Euro 2024 with an entertaining draw in Frankfurt. Ondrej Duda gave Slovakia a 24th-minute lead when got in behind the Romanian defence to power in a header from Juraj Kucka’s pinpoint cross. Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent, and Romania equalised before half-time as Razvan Marin fired a ferocious penalty into the top corner after David Hancko fouled Ianis Hagi in the box.

Belgium stutter into last 16 despite draw with Ukraine

Belgium reached the knockout stages of Euro 2024 as group runners-up – but Ukraine exited the competition following their goalless draw in Stuttgart. Ukraine knew they needed a win to progress but they were unable to make an impact – limiting Belgium to few chances but lacking a consistent attacking threat of their own until late on.

England top Group C despite drab stalemate with Slovenia

England moved into Euro 2024’s last 16 at the top of Group C – but it was only achieved after another drab display with a draw against Slovenia in Cologne. Gareth Southgate’s side offered up slightly more than in the abysmal performance against Denmark but once again it was nowhere good enough to justify England’s status as pre-tournament favourites.
