FIFA has decided to increase the size of the squads as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the unusual timing of the tournament. National teams will be allowed to include a maximum of 26 players in their final squads for the World Cup this year. Previously, coaches were allowed to bring 23 players along to each tournament.

Bayern Munich have completed the signing of Sadio Mane from Liverpool in a deal worth up to £35m. The 30-year-old has signed a contract with the German champions until 2025. Bayern will pay Liverpool an initial £27.5m with a further £5m based on appearances, and will pay another £2.5m based on individual and team achievements.

Arsenal have confirmed a deal sign midfielder Fabio Vieira from Porto for £34m including add ons. The 22-year-old is the Gunners’ third summer arrival after goalkeeper Matt Turner and Brazil forward Marquinhos. Arsenal will pay £30m up front plus £4m in performance-related add-ons.

Matt Fitzpatrick held his nerve to secure his first win on American soil clinching his first major title in the process as the 27 year old’s score of six under par was enough to win the 122nd US Open at Brookline one stroke clear of playing partner Will Zalatoris. Fitzpatrick becomes only the third player to win the US Amateur and US Open on the same course.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen held off the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz to win the Canadian Grand Prix from pole position with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton completing the podium. The Silver Arrow of George Russel finished P4 with Charles Leclerc storming from P19 to P5 to limit his losses to Verstappen in the title fight.
