Red Bull’s Max Verstappen grabbed pole from Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso in a gripping qualifying session at the Monaco Grand Prix. Alonso displaced Verstappen at the top of the timesheets with his final lap. The Dutchman was more than 0.2 seconds behind after the first two sectors of his last attempt but a stunning final few corners saw him take pole position by 0.084secs.

Santiago Buitrago climbs to stage 19 glory as Roglič gains on Thomas – Giro d’Italia

The 2023 Giro d’Italia will be decided by an uphill 18.6km individual time trial on Saturday, with Geraint Thomas holding a 26-second advantage over Primoz Roglic. Thomas looked the strongest out of the GC big-hitters in Stage 19 but saw Roglic claw back three seconds with a lightning surge atop Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Santiago Buitrago took the spoils ahead of the ubiquitous Derek Gee.

Filippo Zana denies Pinot to win stage 18 – Giro d’Italia

Italian champion Filippo Zana denied French veteran Thibaut Pinot a farewell victory in a nail-biting conclusion to Stage 18 in the Dolomites. Meanwhile, Primoz Roglic put in a timely reminder of his class by pushing pink jersey Geraint Thomas all the way to Val di Zoldo, the Slovenian rising to second place in the GC after the duo took 21 seconds from Joao Almeida.

Alberto Dainese darts to stage 17 victory – Giro d’Italia

Alberto Dainese rounded Michael Matthews and held off a late surge from Jonathan Milan to win Stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia in a photo finish. After battling back from illness, Italy’s Dainese enjoyed a textbook lead-out from his Team DSM train to inflict a fourth second-place on his in-form compatriot, Milan. Geraint Thomas retained the pink jersey while Mark Cavendish was left frustrated.

Jordi Alba to leave Barcelona at the end of season

Spain left-back Jordi Alba will leave Barcelona this summer after the Spanish champions agree to mutually terminate his contract a season early. Alba, 34, joined the club in 2012 from Valencia and has won six La Liga titles, five Copa del Rey trophies and the Champions League in 2015.
