FC Barcelona midfielder Gavi tore his anterior cruciate ligament on international duty with Spain and needs surgery, his club has confirmed. Gavi, 19, left the pitch in tears on Sunday after landing awkwardly when jumping to control the ball. Barca said he would have surgery on his right ACL, with a further update on the injury due in “the coming days”.

He complained on Wednesday it was “99% show” but the show was all on track in one of the best races of the season. The Netherlands secured a place in the Euro 2024 finals as Wout Weghorst’s strike earned them a 1-0 home win over the Republic of Ireland. The Hoffenheim striker moved clear before rifling into the roof of the net after 11 minutes. Leclerc on pole ahead of inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc took pole position for the Las Vegas Grand Prix after Ferrari dominated qualifying in Formula 1’s prestigious new race in Sin City. Leclerc was quicker by just 0.044 seconds than team-mate Carlos Sainz, who has a 10-place grid penalty and will start 12th. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen – who was third fastest – will therefore start alongside Leclerc.

Everton handed 10 point deduction for financial breaches

Everton have received an immediate 10-point deduction after being found to have breached the Premier League’s financial rules. English top-flight clubs are permitted to lose £105m over three years, and an independent commission found Everton’s losses to 2021-22 amounted to £124.5m. The punishment is the biggest sporting sanction in the competition’s history and leaves Everton 19th in the table.
