Netherlands fightback to crush Irish hopes of qualification

Republic of Ireland lost 2-1 to the Netherlands in their Euro 2024 Group B qualifier as their slim qualification hopes went up in smoke. Ireland got off to a dream start when, with just two minutes gone, Dutch skipper Virgil van Dijk was penalised for handling James McClean’s corner and Adam Idah fired home from the penalty spot. However a Cody Gakpo penalty and a second half strike from Wout Weghorst turned the tie for the Dutch.

Rui Costa (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) sprinted to victory from a three-man group of escapees on stage 15 of the Vuelta a España on Sunday afternoon. The former world champion kicked past Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) to the line in Lekunberri.

Just 24 hours after a total capitulation on the Col d’Aubisque, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) bounced back in surprising fashion to win stage 14 of the Vuelta a España. Evenepoel had been up the road with Romain Bardet (dsm-firmenich) for more than half of the stage to the Puerto de Belagua, and attacked his companion 3.9km from the top of the final climb to solo to victory

Jonas Vingegaard wins atop Col du Tourmalet as Kuss retains lead – Vuelta a Espana

Sepp Kuss held onto his Vuelta a España lead as his team-mate Jonas Vingegaard rode away to gain 34 seconds in the general classification and win a brutal mountain stage atop the Col du Tourmalet. Vingegaard saved his attack until 8km to go on the final climb, by then the GC contenders had one less rival to worry about as Remco Evenepoel had seen his Vuelta title defense crumble.
