Verstappen beats McLaren duo in Austrian Sprint

Max Verstappen fought off an early onslaught from the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to win the sprint race at the Austrian Grand Prix. Norris challenged Verstappen hard in the early laps before losing second place to Piastri as the Briton challenged the Red Bull for the lead on lap five. Norris came back at Piastri in the second part of the race but could not get close enough to mount an attack.

Aston Martin have confirmed Lance Stroll will race for the team next year “and beyond” ending any slim chances the Canadian would depart the team owned by his father Lawrence. Elsewhere on the grid Pierre Gasly will remain an Alpine driver into the next major F1 regulations changes in 2026 after the team announced it has extended his contract with him.

Georgia reach last 16 with famous win over Portugal

Georgia made history and reached their first major tournament knockout stage with victory over Portugal at Euro 2024. Portugal had already won the group, but were shocked in their final group stage game before the clock struck two minutes as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia drilled a low shot past Diogo Costa. Georges Mikautadze added a second from the penalty spot to send the debutants into dreamland and a last 16 tie with Spain.

Tosun the hero as Turkey edge out 10 man Czech Republic

Cenk Tosun scored a stoppage-time winner as Turkey beat the Czech Republic in a fiery final group game to secure a last-16 tie against Austria. The Czechs needed to win Wednesday’s final group game to avoid being eliminated, and they pushed for victory in the tense closing stages. But they left gaps in defence and former Everton striker Tosun cut inside and drove a shot into the back of the net.
