Netherlands fight back to crush Turkish dreams

The Netherlands came from behind to see off Turkey and set up a semi-final against England at Euro 2024. An own goal from Mert Muldur, bundling the ball over his goalline under pressure from Cody Gakpo, meant the Dutch clawed back the lead having trailed at the break. Centre-back Samet Akaydin had deservedly put Turkey in front when he headed in Arda Guler’s dinked cross, capping an impressive first-half display.

Jordan Pickford was the shootout hero as England kept their Euro 2024 dreams alive by beating Switzerland on penalties to reach the semi-finals. Bukayo Saka cancelled out Breel Embolo’s opener to take the quarter-final to extra-time and onto penalties after it ended 1-1, with the England star converting to bury the ghosts of his Euro 2020 final miss.

Girmay sprints to second stage win at the Tour de France

Jonas Abrahamsen led for the vast majority of Saturday’s Stage 8 of the Tour de France, but his combative solo came to nought late on as a charging peloton caught him with 14 kilometres to go. And from the pack, it was Biniam Girmay who surged to a brilliant sprint victory, taking his second win of this year’s race just millimetres ahead of Jasper Philipsen.

Russell takes pole as Mercedes lock out front row at Silverstone

Mercedes’ George Russell pipped teammate Lewis Hamilton to pole position for tomorrow’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone. McLaren’s Lando Norris did enough to see off the Red Bull of Max Verstappen to insure it will be an all British top three. Oscar Piastri will start from P5 in the other McLaren while Nico Hulkenberg produced a superb lap to qualify P6 for Haas.
