Dean Henderson’s mistake piled more misery on winless Crystal Palace as Chris Wood sealed victory for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. The Palace goalkeeper, in front of watching interim England manager Lee Carsley, allowed Wood’s second-half strike to squirm under his arm. Charles Leclerc impressively won the United States Grand Prix in a surprisingly-dominant one-two for Ferrari as Lando Norris lost third place to title rival Max Verstappen after being penalised for a late overtake on his F1 title rival. While Ferrari overcame the championship’s top two and front-row starters in a supreme show of speed as Leclerc led home team-mate Carlos Sainz, all eyes ended up still being on the title protagonists as they duelled over the final podium berth in a gripping, tense and ultimately controversial conclusion to the race.

Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League with victory over Chelsea at Anfield as manager Arne Slot’s outstanding start continued. Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead from the spot after 29 minutes, Nicolas Jackson equalised for the visitors three minutes after the restart but Liverpool took only three minutes to restore their lead through Curtis Jones who appeared at the back post to slide home the winner from a Salah cross.

McLaren’s Lando Norris beat title rival Max Verstappen’s Red Bull to pole position at the United States Grand Prix with what he said was “the best lap of my career”. Norris was helped by Mercedes driver George Russell crashing late in the session, which prevented any driver improving on their second laps. Norris had been 0.031 seconds quicker than Verstappen on their first laps, but the Dutchman had started his final lap much better than the Briton, only for both to have to abort.
